Gol, South Khorasan

Gol (Persian: گل‎, also Romanized as Gul)[1] is a village in Barakuh Rural District, Jolgeh-e Mazhan District, Khusf County, South Khorasan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 650, in 232 families.[2]

Gol with a very old history have experienced the lives of many people. It is said that about a few centuries ago, it had a much larger population than the Khosf, due to better climate and the amount of groundwater. Due to its remoteness from transportation routes and successive droughts and the lack of attention of the rulers to the agricultural activities, its population has been declining throughout history. Its historical background can be understood from the historical monuments, the remains of which still exist. According to the data obtained from elderly people of this village, the British and Russians were commuting in this place and there are still the remains of the caravanserais where they stopped and rested, where unfortunately it is getting destroyed every year. This village is one of the few villages in South Khorasan that has been the cradle of knowledge and equipped with educational centers since ancient times, and its school is famous in general and in particular.

Naming

The name of Gol village is derived from factors such as the pleasant climate of the region, fertile soil and the growth of various fragrant flowers, crops and gardens, as well as the settlement of a tribe with this name in the region. At the entrance of Gol village, a welcome sign has been installed by rural governors. Then, "Bahar" square is seen with a symbolic "Kharas" stone in the middle, which was used to separate straw from grain with the help of donkeys and cows in ancient times . Naming the streets and alleys with the names of martyrs, poets, regional and national elders, paved streets and installed trash cans attract the attention of every visitor and evoke the view of a city in mind, and how beautiful and graceful it is for this place to be called "Gol".
