Hermann Epenstein

Hermann Louis Epenstein, Ritter von Mauternburg (8 January 1850, Berlin - 5 June 1934, Mauterndorf) was German-Austrian physician and merchant. He was the godfather of Hermann Göring, the Nazi leader and commander of the Luftwaffe.

Biography

Hermann Louis von Epenstein was born to a Catholic mother and Jewish father, whom had converted to Catholicism in order to marry his mother, in Berlin.

During a stay in German South West Africa he met the local imperial commissioner Heinrich Ernst Göring and his wife Franziska, whose child he delivered. In Germany, the Görings lived in his house in Berlin-Friedenau (Fregestraße 19). Franziska became Epenstein's lover and has an open relationship with him, staying with him when she visited, while her husband was housed apart.[1] Epenstein was the godfather of all five children of Göring's second marriage, including Hermann and Albert.[2] Speculation that he is the father of the two are rejected by historians.[3]

He lived at Mauterndorf Castle.

After the unsuccessful Beer Hall Putsch in 1923, Göring found refuge with Epenstein in Mauterndorf.
