High Performance Frigate Programme
High Performance Frigate Programme (HPFG) is an indigenous frigate development program established under the armed forces' Forces Goal 2030 program. The project, managed by the Bangladesh Navy, aims to develop next generation multipurpose frigates that can be deployed in a range of missions to enhance overall combat and reconnaissance capabilities of the Navy.[1]
In 2018, several countries showed interest in pursuing a joint-development and production program.
According to the modernization goal, Bangladesh plans to introduce six frigates into service by 2030.[2]
Introduction
In the Forces Goal 2030 modernization program designed and launched in 2011, Bangladesh Navy expressed its ambition of expanding its naval footprint in Indian Ocean through expansion of the size of naval fleet and operational capabilties. At the time, Navy expressed interest in fulfilling the frigate program through acquiring the required platforms from another country. As a result of high economic growth and emerging defense sector, the government restructured the modernization program in 2017, opening a scope for larger allocation towards the program. In 2018, the Navy announced it has achieved the capability of frigate development at newly expanded Chittagong Dry Dock Limited, and thus, intend to develop the frigates at the shipyard with foreign assistance.[3]
The same year Navy opened a bid for foreign shipyards to submit their designs and proposal for the frigate program, and attrached a large number of bids.
