Holter Museum of Art

The Holter Museum of Art was established in 1987 in Helena, Montana to provide a locality[1] with contemporary art exhibits,[2] education from local artists,[3] unique arts programing, summer camps[4] and artistic creativity.[5] In 2002, 6,500 square feet were added to the space, rendering the establishment 17,000 square feet. The museum hosts 20+ rotating exhibitions annually as well as lectures and other art-related activities. The museum now comprises: five galleries, a teaching center, and a collections and research center.[6]

Operations and activities

In March 2020, the Holter board was finalizing its budget for a new design ‘Holter Re-Imagined’ when the coronavirus pandemic shuttered its doors.  The museum's executive director and ceramic sculptor Chris Riccardo hired Meagan Miller, CWG interior designer to amend the plan.[7] A year later this had morphed into the E. L. Wiegand Creativity Center design.[8] In June 2020, bi-weekly classes were offered in conjunction with St. Peter's Health[9] taught by Holter's Curator of Education Sondra Hines. The idea was to offer a creative outlet for patients to work with art materials in a relaxing space – but not formal therapy.[10] On March 18, 2021, the Healing Art exhibit opened in the museum's Sherman Gallery, displaying works from St. Peter's Health Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) inpatients.[11] Running until June 6, 2021, this was set up in part to honor May's Mental Health Awareness month. Facilitated by Sondra Hines[12] and Heather Myers, CTRS, a BHU Recreation Therapist from St. Peters,[13] the event was featured in KRTV’s ‘Positively Montana’ campaign.[14] On July 17, 2021, the Holter Museum will hold a rainbow-colored T-shirt party for children, marking the Pride parade.[15]
