Indian Medical Association

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is a national voluntary organisation of physicians in India, which looks or cares after the interest of doctors or the well being of the community at large. It was established in 1928[2] as the All India Medical Association, and was renamed the "Indian Medical Association" in 1930. It is a society registered under The Societies Act of India.

Background

With over 3,000,000 member doctors[3] in more than 1,700 active local branches in 29 states and union territories in India,[4] it is the largest association of physicians and medical students in India.

The IMA is headquartered in Calcutta (Kolkata). The general control, management and direction of policy is vested in the Central Council, to which local branches send representatives and which meets once a year to lay down policies. It delegates its powers to a Working Committee (a representative body of all state branches) for implementation of programmes and activities.[2] This committee meets at least three times a year to execute various activities for the welfare of members and the people in matters of health.[5][6][7]

The Indian Medical association is a founder member of the World Medical Association.[8]

Surgeon Dr J.A Jayalal took charge as a national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for the year 2020-2021.[9]

Journal of the Indian Medical Association

The Journal of the Indian Medical Association, popularly known as JIMA, is indexed in the Index Medicus. It is a monthly journal and has the largest circulation of all the indexed journals in the world with over 240,000 subscribers for its electronic version.[10] The journal is also available in microfilm through Bell & Howels, US.[11] The Journal was founded by Sir Nilratan Sircar, Bidhan Chandra Roy, Kumud Sankar Ray and other scholars and doyens of the medical profession in 1930. The Journal office is in Calcutta.

Indian Medical Students' Association

On 5 October 2013, the Indian Medical Students' Association was inducted as the official student wing of the Indian Medical Association. It claims to have more than 50,000 members from different medical colleges in the country and aims to promote new endeavours among medical students in India.[12][13]
