History

The origin of the Jaiswal community is not known, but it is speculated that their ancestors hailed from town 'Jais' in Uttar Pradesh and came to known as Jaiswals. They are mostly found in North India including Agra, Delhi and Rajasthan. Because their hereditary occupation of distilling and selling liquor[1] was considered degrading, the Kalwars were moved down from Kshatriya to Vaishya[3] Varna in the traditional caste hierarchy of South Asia.

During the British rule, the Jaiswal took up a variety of occupations, including trade, agriculture, army service, government service, and law.[4] In 2003, Jaiswal Kalwars were classified and listed as an Other Backward Class by some state governments like Delhi, Rajasthan & Uttar Pradesh.[5][3] Although Jaiswal Jain and Rajput still belong to General Category in India's positive discrimination system.
