James Manyika is chairman and Director of the Mckinsey Global Institute, the business and economics research institute at McKinsey & Company management consultancy.[1] During the Obama administration, Manyika served on the United States Global Development Council as vice-chair.[2] More recently, he co-authored and presented to the public the McKinsey report Race in the Workplace.[3] His decision-making process and predictions about the future of work are described in Ben Sasse's 2018 book Them: Why We Hate Each Other--and How to Heal.[4]
Early life and education
Trained as a roboticist, Manyika holds a doctorate in AI and robotics from Oxford University,[1] where he published in the 1990s on decentralized processing of sensor data.[5]
Career and research
Manyika was a visiting scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Labs.[1]
Artificial Intelligence
Manyika is a Fellow at DeepMind in the team that explores the ethical and social questions around artificial intelligence.[6] Manyika is a member of the advisory council of the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence at Stanford University.[7] He was an officer of the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence, a project at Stanford University where experts discuss the future societal impacts of artificial intelligence.[8]
Internet and global digitization
He is also on the advisory board of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE), a project that investigate the evolution of businesses as digitization accelerates.[9] Similarly, he is on the advisory board of the Oxford Internet Institute, a department of social and computer science at the University of Oxford.[10] Manyika is a board member of the Khan Academy, a non-profit organization offering free education online.[11]
Non-profit
Manyika is involved in a number of foundations. For example, he is on the board of Lever For Change, a MacArthur Foundation that connects philanthropists with the project that could have the highest positive social impact.[12] Other foundation where Manyika is a board member of include the Hewlett Foundation,[13] the Markle Foundation,[14] and the XPrize Foundation.[15] He is also a senior advisor at Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Wendy and Eric Schmidt.[16]
Through the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research, Manyika established the J.M.D. Manyika Fellowship to support scholars and artists from Zimbabwe or other countries from Southern Africa.[17]
