Binn married Haley Lieberman in December 2003.[6] They have three children[13] and resided together in New York City.[4][14][15] before separating in 2016.[16]
Publishing career
Binn began his publishing career at 23 at the advertising agency, D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles.[1][17][18][19] Upon moving to South Beach, Miami he co-founded Ocean Drive magazine, a luxury publication focusing on Miami, in 1992.[17][18][20]
In 1998, he founded Niche Media, a publisher of regional luxury magazines including Hamptons Magazine (The Hamptons, Long Island, New York),[21][22][23] Aspen Peak (Aspen, Colorado), Boston Common (Boston, Mass), Capitol File (Washington, D.C.).,[24] Gotham (New York),[25][26] Los Angeles Confidential, Vegas Magazine (Las Vegas) and Michigan Avenue (Chicago).[18] The firm was acquired by GMG in 2006,[27] for what is believed to be in excess of $100M.[28][27] In 2010, Binn was appointed Chairman of Niche Media Holdings LLC.[29] In 2011, he partnered with Getty Images and WireImage to promote his personal photography, archives and BinnShot.[30]
In 2010, Binn was the Chief Advisor to Gilt Groupe, an online luxury shopping company[31][32] In January 2016, Gilt was sold to Hudson's Bay Company for $250 million.[33][34]
In 2012, Binn founded DuJour Media,[35][36][37] his first major media launch since he sold Niche Media in 2006.[38][39] DuJour's publications include Town and Country, Gotham Los Angeles, Aspen Peak, the Robb Report and DuJour Magazine, the quarterly released chief publication, that caters to those who have a minimum net worth of $5 million.[40][41]
Since 2016, he has been executive director of JetSmarter, Inc.[42]
Awards and recognition
In 2005, Binn was profiled in Forbes magazine's "Forbes 400",[43] and was awarded Ernst & Young's "Entrepreneur of the Year."[44] In 2007, he was the only media member inducted into the American Advertising Federation's “Advertising Hall of Achievement”.[45] In 2008, he was listed in Crain's “40 Under 40” list of successful entrepreneurs.[46]
In fall 2012, Crain's New York credited Binn with making print magazines more successful in a time when print is losing market to digital media.[47] He was also recognized by American Advertising Federation.[45] In 2008 he was a recipient of Boston University's Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Profession for his work in the field of communications and media.[48][49]
