Joe Adams (footballer)

Joseph Anthony Adams (born 13 February 2001) is a Welsh professional footballer who plays for Brentford as a midfielder. He is a product of the Bury academy and is a current Wales youth international.

Club career

Bury

A midfielder, Adams joined Bury at the age of seven.[3] Having graduated through the club's academy,[4] he made his first team debut as a substitute for Adam Thompson after 72 minutes of a 3–2 League One defeat to Northampton Town on 14 April 2018.[5] After making four further senior appearances,[6] Adams signed a 2+1⁄2-year professional contract in December 2018.[7] His progression was such that later that month, he was recognised by League Football Education for his football and academic progress.[8] After remaining with the U18 team and making only one further senior appearance during the 2018–19 season,[6] Adams elected to depart Gigg Lane in July 2019.[4]

Brentford

On 19 July 2019, Adams transferred to the B team at Championship club Brentford and signed a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.[3] He made 33 appearances and scored five goals for the B team during the 2019–20 season and gained experience as a right wing back.[9] After scoring 9 goals in 16 appearances during the first half of the 2020–21 season, Adams departed on loan for the remainder of the campaign on 1 February 2021.[10] The loan was ended early 9 weeks later.[11]

Grimsby Town (loan)

On 1 February 2021, Adams joined League Two club Grimsby Town on loan until the end of the 2020–21 season.[10] On his second appearance, in a match versus Crawley Town on 25 February,[12] Adams assisted Filipe Morais for the Mariners' opening goal and scored what proved to be the winner in a 2–1 victory.[13] After four further appearances,[12] the loan was terminated early on 9 April.[11]

International career

Adams has been capped by Wales at U17, U19, U20 and U21 levels.[7][14][15][16] He scored his first international goal in a 2–1 2019 UEFA European U19 Championship qualifying victory over Sweden on 18 November 2018.[2]
