Jonathan Gómez (footballer, born 2003)

Jonathan German Gómez (born September 1, 2003) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a left-back for Segunda División club Real Sociedad B.

Youth soccer

Gómez joined the FC Dallas academy in 2016 at the age of 12.[2] He progressed through the ranks starting with the U-13 side as a left winger.[2] During his three years with the FCD academy he transitioned to playing fullback.[2] After three years with the academy Gómez signed an amateur contract with FC Dallas's reserve side North Texas SC in USL League One at the age of 15.[2] During his time with North Texas, Gómez started and played in 9 matches, tallying 2 assists.[3]

Professional career

Louisville City

On March 5, 2020, Louisville City FC announced that it had signed Gómez to a professional contract.[4] Gomez made his Louisville City debut in a 3–1 loss to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, coming on in the 83' minute for Brian Ownby. He proceeded to appear 36 times and score two goals in his bid to set a precedent within the club as a youth development player.[5]

Real Sociedad

On September 30, 2021, Real Sociedad announced an agreement with Louisville City for the transfer of Gómez, with the player signing a contract until 2025 and being initially assigned to the B-team in Segunda División.[6]

International career

Gómez was born and raised in the United States to Mexican parents. He has represented both the United States and Mexico at the youth level, including winning the 2019 Nike International Friendlies with the United States U16s.[7][8] He was one of thirteen non-roster youth players who trained with Mexico during their second-place finish to the United States in the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League Finals,[9] before being named to the United States senior provisional squad for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Gómez was not named to the final roster as the United States won the Gold Cup.[10]

On December 3, 2021, Gómez accepted his first rostered senior call-up, to the United States for a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Carson, California.[11]

Personal life

Born in the United States, Gomez is of Mexican descent. He is the younger brother of soccer player Johan Gomez, who formerly played for North Texas SC before moving to FC Porto.
