Joseph Branciforte

Joseph Branciforte (born 1985) is an American musician, composer, record producer, and recording engineer. He is the founder of the greyfade record label.[1]

Biography

Branciforte grew up in a suburb of New York City studying drums and piano. He began experimenting with recording and electronic music at an early age, before attending Berklee College of Music to study Electronic Production and Design.[1] He cites his introduction to the Cycling '74 Max/MSP software programming environment in 2003 as an event that changed "not only my musical thinking, but also the immediate course of my life."[2]

After returning to New York, Branciforte began a career as a freelance recording engineer, working with such artists as Ben Monder, Tim Berne, Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, Mary Halvorson, and JACK Quartet. In 2010, he formed the "garage-chamber" ensemble The Cellar and Point with guitarist Christopher Botta. The group's debut album, Ambit, was issued in 2014 by Cuneiform, with Branciforte playing drums and producing.[3] The album combined chamber writing for strings and vibraphone with experimental rock, jazz, and electronic elements, with All Music Guide calling the record, "one of 2014's finest albums of challenging, engaging, and genre-defying contemporary music."[1][4]

In 2019, Branciforte founded the greyfade record label in order to present "album-length statements from artists exploring process-based works, electronic & acoustic minimalism, algorithmic composition, and alternate tuning systems".[5][6] The label's inaugural release was LP1, a collaboration between vocalist Theo Bleckmann and Branciforte on modular synthesizer, Fender Rhodes, and electronic processing.[7] In 2021, he collaborated with composer Kenneth Kirschner on an album featuring algorithmically composed pieces for acoustic ensembles called From The Machine: Volume 1.[8][9]
