Julia Jäkel

Julia Jäkel (born November 13, 1971 in Mainz) is a German business executive and publisher.[1] She serves as non-executive director of several companies. From 2012 to 2021, Jäkel was Chief Executive Officer of Gruner + Jahr and a member of the Bertelsmann management.[2][3] She also chaired the Bertelsmann Content Alliance since its inception.[4][5] Jäkel is a widely known promoter of diverse leadership.[6]

Education

Jäkel studied history, political science, and economics at Heidelberg University and the Graduate School of Arts and Science of Harvard University. She holds an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge.[7][8]

Career

In 1997, Jäkel completed the Bertelsmann Entrepreneurs Program and joined Gruner + Jahr, where she rose through the ranks.[9] In 2012, Jäkel was appointed to the Executive Board, taking responsibility for the German business.[10]

Six months later, Jäkel became Chief Executive Officer of Gruner + Jahr. She led the digital transformation of Gruner + Jahr and multiplied digital revenues.[11] Jäkel promoted creativity and launched new magazines and new businesses in both Germany and France.[12][13][14][15] She reorganized the portfolio, focusing the business on Germany and France.

In 2019, Jäkel became Chairwoman of the Board of the Bertelsmann Content Alliance.[16] In 2021, Jäkel left both Gruner + Jahr and Bertelsmann at her own request.[17][18]
