Jupiter 4

"Jupiter 4" is a song by American singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten. The song was released in November 2018 as the second single from her 2019 album Remind Me Tomorrow, a follow up to the lead single "Comeback Kid" which was released in October 2018.[1] The song was written by Van Etten and was produced by John Congleton.[2]

Background

The song is named after the vintage synthesizer Roland Jupiter-4.[3][4]

Reception

The song received generally positive reviews from critics. Eve Barlow reviewing the song for Pitchfork wrote, "'Jupiter 4' sounds like the product of a songwriter undergoing a revival, unpacking and remoulding their own romance with music again."[5] Reviewing for NPR, Lars Gotrich wrote, "'Jupiter 4' meditates on a love so real that it echoes throughout your psyche, but accompanied by whirring synths and haunting drones, the song has a dark undercurrent of unquenchable thirst." Justin Kamp of Paste wrote, "Where her first single 'Comeback Kid' felt brash and bracing, full of dark synths and pounding bass, 'Jupiter 4' feels dark in a different way. It's built on queasy synths and horror-movie drones."[2]

Music video

A music video for the song was released on November 27, 2018. The video was directed by American film and music video director Katherine Dieckmann.[6] About the collaboration with Dieckmann, Van Etten said, "I had been looking forward to collaborating with Katherine again since finishing our work together on her film in 2016."[7][8]
