Career

K Madhu began his career, working as an assistant director under eminent film director M. Krishnan Nair, who was also a recipient of the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award.

He directed over 30 outstanding feature films in various languages including Irupatham Noottandu, Mounam Sammadham, Crime File, Nadiya Kollappetta Rathri, Moonam Mura and the CBI Series. He went on to make his debut as a director in 1986, with Malarum Kiliyum, starring Mammootty. He succeeded in getting a career break in 1987 with Irupatham Noottandu starring Mohanlal which broke all the records in collection & popularity.

It was followed by Oru CBI Diary Kurippu in 1988. The highest-grossing Malayalam film at that time. Considered one of the best crime thrillers in Malayalam, it eventually developed a cult following. The movie ran for a whole year (365 days) in Safire Theatre, Madras (India's first largest multi-theatre complex) at a time when Malayalam films didn't find much of an audience in the neighbouring states. Oru CBI Diary Kurippu was later remade in Hindi (as ‘Police Public’ with Rajkumar and Kabir Bedi) and in Telugu (as ‘Nyayam Kosam’ with Rajsekhar).

Though he has worked with several scriptwriters, most of his successful films were with S N Swamy. Writer Swamy and Madhu have collaborated for many films, debuting with Irupatham Noottandu and later in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, Moonnam Mura, Nariman and Sethurama Iyer CBI among others. Most of them were in the legal, crime, thriller genres. He introduced Mammootty into Tamil films through the hit film 'Mounam Sammadham’. He also introduced the popular Tamil hero Sarathkumar through his Telugu film in which Dr Rajasekhar was the hero.

In 2017, he announced a multilingual historical film titled ‘Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma’ based on Kerala History which will be produced in five languages - Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kanada & Hindi, followed by a sequel. The series of movies depict the life stories of two eminent kings of erstwhile Travancore.

Mammootty starring the fifth sequel of the CBI series written by SN Swamy is the forthcoming directorial this year (2021).
