Kengyō

The title of kengyō (Japanese: 検校) was said to have been awarded to blind, gifted musicians. The title has been bestowed to such musicians starting from the Kamakura Era to the early years of the Meiji Era. A recipient of the title was a man known as Jōhide, later known as Yatsuhashi Kengyo.[1]
