Place and people

The term "Khwarezmian" is used for the inhabitants of the Khwarazm region, for the dynasty which emerged from there, and for the Khwarezmian tribes who fled in front of the Mongol invasion and became an important actor in 13th-century Levant (see 1244 sack of Jerusalem and the subsequent Battle of La Forbie).

  • Khwarazm, a large oasis region on the Amu Darya river delta in western Central Asia bordering the former Aral Sea and the center of the Khwarezmian civilization
  • Khwarazmian dynasty, a Persianate Sunni Muslim dynasty of Turkic mamluk origin that ruled Greater Iran from about 1077 to 1231
