Kim Jung-hwan (fencer)

Kim Jung-hwan (Korean: 김정환; Hanja: 金政煥; born September 2, 1983) is a South Korean right-handed sabre fencer.[3]

In this Korean name, the family name is Kim.

Kim is a six-time team Asian champion, three-time individual Asian champion, two-time team world champion, and 2018 individual world champion.

A three-time Olympian, Kim is a two-time individual Olympic bronze medalist, and two-time team Olympic champion.

Career

He took up fencing in junior high school in 1996, influenced by a friend and his physical education teacher.[1]

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal in the Men's team sabre event. In the individual event he was defeated in the second round.[4]

In the 2014–15 Fencing World Cup, Kim won gold at the New York Grand Prix in individual men's sabre,[5] and finished the season ranked world #2 behind teammate Gu Bon-Gil.[1] He is the 2015 Asian Champion.[6]

Kim won the bronze medal in the Men's Sabre event at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, as well as the gold medal at the 2018 World Championships in Wuxi, China.

Personal life

Kim married Byun Jung-eun in 2020. Kim later announced his wife's pregnancy on a television show that she was 14 weeks pregnant.[7]
