Koppången (song)

Koppången is a Swedish song, with music composed originally for violin in 1998 by Per-Erik Moraeus. Lyrics were added in both Swedish and English in 1999 by Py Bäckman [1] The song name comes from the wetlands and nature preserve Koppången in Orsa Municipality, Dalarna, Sweden.

In 1998 the instrumental version of Koppången was recorded by the folk-music group Orsa Spelmän, which includes the melody's composer Per-Erik Moraeus, and his brothers Kalle Moraeus and Olle Moraeus, on the album "Ödra" which was released on the label Mono Music (MMCD 013) [2]

In 1999 Anne Sofie von Otter recorded Koppången on the album Home for Christmas, with lyrics both in English (track 1) and Swedish (track 21), released by Deutsche Grammophon [3]

Sissel Kyrkjebø has sung and recorded Koppången several times, including in the 2001 live concert album, In Symphony, with Kalle Moraeus on violin. [4]

Koppången has since been covered on over 20 recordings by several artists including Helen Sjöholm, Sanna Nielsen, and Elisabeth Andreassen.[1]

The lyrics of Py Bäckman describe a country church in a winter scene at Christmas time. Koppången has become a classic Christmas song in Sweden. Pernilla Eskilsdotter, music host on Sveriges Radio P2 comments: "Det är ofta svårt för nya jullåtar att etablera sig och bli klassiker. En som har lyckats med det är Koppången."[5] ("It is often difficult for new Christmas songs to establish themselves and become classics. One which has succeeded with that is Koppången")
