Lena Fiagbe
Lena Fiagbe is a British soul singer-songwriter. With a similar style and sound as contemporaneous singer, Gabrielle, who had just reached #1 with her debut single, "Dreams", Lena signed to U2's record label, Mother Records. During 1993, she was predicted by the music press to become a bigger success than her career eventually afforded. The debut single, "You Come From Earth", was released in July 1993, billed simply as 'Lena'. The song was widely expected to chart well. However, it surprisingly stalled at #69 in the UK Singles Chart, despite radioplay on BBC Radio 1, and preemptive inclusion on the compilation album, Now That's What I Call Music 25, issued in August. It was sequenced after "Dreams" on Side One, which demonstrates the perceived similarities between the songs, and the inner booklet commentary about the song predicted it was "chart-bound".[1]
She then went on and reached the UK Top 20 Singles Chart with her second single, "Gotta Get It Right", in November 1993, which was also included on Now That's What I Call Music 26, her second and last song to appear on the long running compilation series.
Both her debut, and hit single were included on her debut album, Visions, which was released on Mother Records in 1994. The debut album also featured the singles, "What's It Like to Be Beautiful", which reached #52 in April 1994, and the title track, "Visions", was also released as a single and reached #48 in June 1994. "Is It Because" was the fifth and final single from the Visions album, reaching #97 in November. "Can't Smile Without You" was the cover version of a Barry Manilow song that Fiagbe recorded for the Four Weddings and a Funeral soundtrack album. "African Dream" with Wasis Diop in 1996 was a minor hit and she has not charted with any new material since then.
