Little Girl (film)

Little Girl (French: Petite fille) is a 2020 French documentary film written and directed by Sébastien Lifshitz. The film premiered in the Panorama Dokumente section at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival.[3] It had its Spanish premiere in the New Waves Non fiction section of the 2020 Festival Cine Sevilla in Seville, Spain.[1]

Plot

The film documents seven year old trans girl, Sasha, and her family as they accept her gender identity.

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 100% based on 25 critics, with an average rating of 7.8/10.[4] On Metacritic, Little Girl holds a weighted average score of 80 out of 100 based on 10 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[5]

Awarding the film with the NYT's Critics Pick award, Beatrice Loayza of The New York Times wrote "One could easily mistake Little Girl for a fictional drama that tends toward observation and realism".[6]

Writing for The Guardian, Simran Hans awarded the film with 4 stars out of 5 and called it "[A] tender observational documentary",[7] while Boyd van Hoeij of The Hollywood Reporter called it "Little girl, [but] big documentary".[8]

Guy Lodge of Variety praised the director for his "limpid shooting style" and compared the film to Tomboy of Céline Sciamma.[9]

According to Carlos Aguilar of the Los Angeles Times, "Little Girl plays almost as if it were an aesthetically verité, yet scripted fiction film from the Dardenne brothers".[10]
