M. M. Akbar

Meleveettil Muhammad Akbar (Malayalam: മേലേവീട്ടില്‍ മുഹമ്മദ് അക്ബര്‍) is a islamic preacher.[1] Akbar used to be a schoolteacher in Malappuram. He had taught physics. As a student, Akbar had been associated with Mujahid Student Movement. Although he is known as an orator, Akbar never had any academic training as a Muslim scholar.[2] He is the founder Director of Niche of Truth,[3][4] an Islamic missionary organization based in Kerala[3] and the editor of Sneha Samvadam magazine published from Kochi, Kerala, India.[5] Niche of Truth has created the first website in Malayalam,[6] about the life of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. The Cochin-based islamic missionary organization's objective is to present Islam as a comprehensive religion in front of India's pluralist society.

He is the managing director of Peace International School, a chain of 13 schools run by the Peace Foundation. The chain came under controversy as it was found to be promoting communal division through its syllabus [7][8]

The Kerala government ordered closure of the Peace schools In January 2018 [8] and issued a look out notice for Akbar. Kochi police arrested him on 25 February 2018.[9]

MM Akbar has been granted bail by the court and currently all the peace schools are functioning normally. No material promoting communal division was found in the school syllabus by the High Court. [10]

Debate with E.A.Jabbar

E.A.Jabbar's unanswered challenge

I challenge, if you can bring a new piece of knowledge or information from Quran, which was not known by Arabs of that time but revealed through Quran to these Arabs and they had understood it from Quran at that time and followed, and later proved by the scientific community to be true, for example, the earth is round or day-night phenomena is happening due to earth's rotation, etc which was not known to Arabs of that time when Muhammad introduced Quran, but they got this knowledge through Quran at that time itself, and later science validated or discovered to be true, then I will recite Shahadah Kalima and will become Muslim again.

The three Conditions for the piece of information from the Quran should be:

  • 1. It should be a new piece of information or knowledge, which Arabs of that time didn't know
  • 2. This new piece of information or knowledge should be understood by the Arabs of that time through Quran by Allah
  • 3. This piece of information or knowledge should later be validated by science as true.

On 9 January 2021 he and a very popular free thinker, atheist, humanist, rationalist E.A.Jabbar debated on the topic, whether Quran is scientific or not. Jabbar had been challenging Islamist scholars in Kerala for many years to prove Quran was god's own words. He had ridiculed Quran and Hadiths, stating that they contained nonsense and mistakes. After he turned down many scholars who came forward, he accepted the Islamic scholar M. M. Akbar and agreed to debate him on the subject open-stage. A longstanding rationalist organisation―Kerala Yukthivadi Sangham―arranged the venue and stage to have this debate. The debate did take place as scheduled even after a long speculation of it being called off thanks to Akbar failing to show up, as it happened with other scholars who had challenged Jabbar earlier. A leading newspaper in Kerala run by pro-Islamist management, Thejus Daily, ran a story about this debate in which Akbar was quoted to have said that the debate helped unite the entire Muslim community in Kerala.[13]

In contrast, both sides claimed victory in the debate, and the video of the debate which went viral was re-used with footage from the original video to prove the success of either side.[14] Not to mention that the video that appeared on M. M. Akbar's YouTube account proclaimed his victory over Jabbar in the debate.[15]

The flip side of the program was that M. M. Akbar was criticized for stating that the Quran is scientific with his version of understanding the text. His opponents said that he had reduced the Quran to a mere science book.
