Mahmud Muhieddine Barmada

Mahmud Muhieddine Barmada (Arabic: محمود محي الدين برمدا ; November 14, 1969 – December 2, 2016) Known as Michael or Mike Barmada, was an American geneticist, professor, and academic administrator of Syrian-Lebanese descent. Growing his scientific career at the University of Pittsburgh apace with his field, at the beginning of high throughput and data-intensive computing, using the cloud as a research tool long before we used it to store selfies, garnering grant funding at a steady rate, mentoring over 30 masters, doctorate, medical students and faculty, Mike taught genetics, bioinformatics, and analysis at the graduate and postgraduate level and adjunct institutions. He served on over 25 committees since 2001 and as Director, Bioinformatics Resource Center, Institute for Personalized Medicine, since 2012, Associate Director, Center for Simulation and Modeling since 2012, Director, Center for Computational Genetics, GSPH since 2004, Director, Department Computational Resources Division, Department of Human Genetics, GSPH since 1999. It was his greatest joy and honor to be a teacher. He took that show on the road with Dan Weeks via the India-US Research Training Program in Genetics funded by NIH Fogarty International Center. Mike was PSIAA certified ski instructor teaching at Hidden Valley throughout the 1990s and a BSA scoutmaster for some years with Troop 834. In every interaction, Mike cherished the minds of his family, friends, collaborators, coworkers, fellow volunteers, and students.[1][2]

Early life

Mike Barmada was born in Detroit MI, USA on November 14, 1969 to a prominent Syrian family. He is the son of Bicher Barmada, Thoracic Surgeon and Mamdouha Ahdab-Barmada, Pathologist. His grandfather was Mahmud Barmada (1916 -1999) and his great grandfather was Mustafa Bey Barmada (the former Governor-General of the State of Aleppo).

Education

He obtained his BS from Carnegie Mellon University in Chemistry and Biological Sciences, Professional Minor in Piano Composition, an Honors Degree in Biological Research and his M.A in Molecular Genetics from Johns Hopkins University and Ph.D. in Human Genetics; Area of Specialization: Statistical and Computational Genetics from University of Pittsburgh.[1]

Cancer Journey

As a computational geneticist, using his experience on the cutting edge of personalized medicine, Mike developed a mouse avatar to customize chemotherapy, sequenced his tumor and himself for full genome comparison, implemented the ideal exercise, diet, and supplements for whole-body support, participated in a vaccine trial and was a recipient of an exciting new immuno-oncologic therapy. Disappointingly, there were no differences between the tumor and himself, no known gene amplification or protein overexpression, no target at which to aim his impressive abilities. He did find genes that predisposed him to this and other cancers. While he persevered with awe-inspiring optimism, much of the last two and a half years were a gift of time wrought by Mike's considerable talent and connections. The M. Michael Barmada Endowed Fund in Human Genetics has been established in his memory.

According to Google Scholar, Barmada has an h-index of 54[3] according to the Scopus one of 47.[4] He was a fellow member of the American Society of Human Genetics since 1992.
