Maria Del Rio (physician)

Maria Del Rio (12 February 1892 Reggio Emilia - 9 July 1978 Casina ) was an Italian physician, scientist and historian.

Life

She was born into a medical family. Her father Pietro was head of surgery at the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital in Reggio Emilia, and her brother was also a surgeon, who died in Somalia.[1]

Maria studied medicine in Genoa with Enrico Morselli and Edoardo Maragliano. She began working at San Lazzaro, the psychiatric hospital in Reggio Emilia, where she met and married Aldo Bertolani. Her work at San Lazzaro continued until the 1940s. Her work was published in the magazine, Rivista Sperimentale di Freniatria.[1]

She was one of the founders of the CISO (Centro Italian History of Health and Hospitality), and was its secretary at the time of the first National Congress, held in Reggio Emilia in 1956. [1]

In 2017, there was a conference on her work.[2]
