Maria Lalić

Maria Lalić is a British painter born in South Yorkshire in 1952. She studied Painting at  Central School of Art and Design (BA) and the Chelsea School of Art (MA) and was Teaching Fellow in Painting at Bath Academy of Art 1977–8.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK and Europe and in the US and New Zealand and is represented in many public collections including those of Tate; the Victoria and Albert Museum; Arts Council England; Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, Exeter; Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum, Hagen and the Museum fur Konkrete Kunst, Ingolstadt.

Lalic's practice uses the material and historical bases of oil painting as the underpinning structure for each of three extensive groups of work.

The 'Colour and Metal' group juxtapose painted panels of artists oil colours whose pigments derive from the metals on adjacent panels - Mars Orange with iron, Viridian with copper.

The 'History Paintings' explore the availability of artists pigments over six eras from 'Cave' to '20th Century' using a 'found' structure: a Winsor and Newton colour chart, and the third, the 'Landscape Paintings', juxtapose a paint made from soil collected at the site of an extant landscape painting (with the place in its title) with paint with that name -' Delft Blue Landscape Painting' 2005 ('View of Delft' Vermeer 1660).

Additionally Lalic continues to work on numerous cycles of drawings that explore the full range of 19 grades of graphite pencil from 10H to 8B.

Lalic has received AHRB, GWMelhuish and British Council awards and was shortlisted for the Jerwood Painting Prize in 1997 . She was Professor of Painting at Bath School of Art and Design, Bath Spa University.
