Development

Anirudh Ravichander started composing for the background score in his studio during May 2020,[2][3] when the Tamil Nadu government permitted to resume post-production works of films that were halted due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.[4] After completing all the works on the background score, within early-January 2021, the final mixing of the score subsequently began.[5] The director Lokesh Kanagaraj watched the final mix of the score, before he attended the promotional event held in Hyderabad with Anirudh, and at the event, Kanagaraj praised his work in the background score saying that "it will take the film to the next level".[5]

With the film's success and also praise directed on Anirudh's score, he added that he is working on the mastering of the background score so as to be released as an album.[6] The original score was released by Sony Music South on 5 February 2021. It consisted of 14 instrumental tracks, with a duration of 26 minutes. Furthermore, two songs from the extended soundtrack — "Vaathi Kabaddi" and "Master the Blaster" — were bundled along with the album.[1][7]

Critical reception

Gautam Sunder from The Hindu stated the background score as the "real winner in hand" with "pulsating rock-heavy themes elevating many of the film’s action sequences and slo-motion moments" and further wrote "Anirudh should rightly walk away with all the plaudits".[8] Writing the critical reception for Firstpost, Ranjani Krishnakumar stated that "Anirudh's BGM singlehandedly upholds ‘mass’ in the film, punching up several scenes, which would have fallen flat otherwise".[9] Janani K. of India Today stated the score as "energetic" and "uplifts the mood of the film",[10] while Anna Smith of Deadline Hollywood called it as "energetic".[11] Writing for The New Indian Express, Sudhir Srinivasan praised "Anirudh's score is the source of much energy and entertainment" and stated that "Quite in keeping with the composer’s style, it’s rock-heavy but that’s not all. It is packed with adrenaline-heavy thumping beats and few light tunes which uplifts the mood of the film".[12]
