Mayday is a 2021 American action drama film, written and directed by Karen Cinorre, in her directorial debut. It stars Grace Van Patten, Mia Goth, Juliette Lewis, Soko and Havana Rose Liu.

Plot

Ana, a former hotel worker, leaves her old life behind to join a group of girls living in a submarine on an island where war never ends. During her stay, Ana gains great instincts during the war. She starts to enjoy her free new life but soon discovers the truth behind the women: they send radio transmissions to war soldiers to lure them to their deaths and also kill other men to prove that women are not to be messed with. Disgusted, she realizes she is not a killer, and with the help of some soldiers she joins, she turns against the other women.

In November 2019, it was announced Grace Van Patten, Mia Goth, Juliette Lewis, Soko and Havana Rose Liu had joined the cast of the film, with Karen Cinorre directing from a screenplay she wrote.[3]

Principal photography began in November 2019.[4][5]

Release

The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 31, 2021.[6] In June 2021, Magnolia Pictures acquired distribution rights to the film.[7]

Critical response

According to Rotten Tomatoes, 58% of 40 critic reviews are positive for the film, and the average rating is 6.1/10. The critics consensus on the website reads: "Viewers may not be left sending out distress calls, but despite interesting ideas and a solid setup, Mayday leaves a frustrating amount of potential untapped."[8]
