Meghna (character)

Meghna (Tamil: மேகனா) is a fictional character and one of the main protagonist in the film Vaaranam Aayiram (2008). The character was created by the director of the film Gautham Vasudev Menon and is portrayed by Sameera Reddy. Meghna was a former university student from Chennai who got a university promotion to attended the University of Berkeley in San Francisco and she is also the former love interest of K.Suriya (portrayed by Suriya). The character received a good outcome to audiences and critics, and it also received generally positive reviews. Up to date many fans and audience still consider Meghna to be one of the best female characters Gautham Vasudev Menon has ever created.

Meghna was one of the most sensational female characters of Tamil cinema. The portrayal of Meghna also nominated actress Sameera Reddy for Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress by Vijay Awards in 2008.[1]

Fictional biography

Meghna is a woman who is believed to be in a early 20s, looking to pursue into getting a degree in economics in the University of Berkeley and later planning onto successfully graduating from university. But unfortunately she later dies by a planned bombing attack when she was on her way to Oklahoma regarding a school project.

In the film

She is first spotted in the film by K.Suriya (portrayed by Suriya) where she is sleeping in a train and immediately K.Suriya is attracted to her. After leaving the train Meghna and K.Suriya lose touch, but however few weeks later K.Suriya finds Meghna's house and asks her on a mini date however she rejects the offer later saying that she is moving to the University of Berkeley to continue her education and tells of K.Suriya to not keep in touch with her even after she goes to San Francisco. After Meghna moving to San Francisco K.Suriya goes to San Francisco to keep his words by finding her there, he later finds a sticky note on a college board which has the details of Meghna in it and eventually finds her in her apartment. Later Meghna and K.Suriya fall in love in San Francisco and stay there until Meghna finishes her university degree. One day Meghna receives a offer to travel to Oklahoma regarding a school project for a week. But she died because of the bombing there. However Meghna did not survive the attack and later died by serious injuries. Later Meghna's father arrives in San Francisco from Chennai to bring back her body.

Character casting

Before Sameera, Gautham Vasudev Menon requested actress Genelia D'Souza to portray the character Meghna but however Genelia walked out from the film after Gautham Menon refused to pay Genelia a hefty salary that she demanded since she was trying to compare the salary rates given to her from Telugu cinema and Tamil cinema. After her walk out Gautham Menon auditioned Sameera Reddy who requested to be part of the film and later he approved her audition and immediately asked her to portray the character of Meghna. And her character as Meghna also marked her first stepping stone into Tamil cinema.

The character of Meghna has received good feedback from critics and audiences. Audiences appreciated the effort that Sameera Reddy put in to play the character in the film. Sameera Reddy also announced in a statement commenting "This character was a very magical part of her career" and saying in another statement that "Meghna will always be a part of me".[3] www.rediff.com also announced in one of their posts saying that "Her performance as Meghna is talked about and appreciated".[4] Even after more then 10 years since the character was introduced many tik tokers and fans have recently re created the magical moment of Meghna in song Nenjukkul Peidhidum from the film Vaaranam Aayiram.[5] Sameera Reddy also posted a video on her Instagram account doing a 13 year tribute to character Meghna and Vaaranam Aayiram, she also commented say that "Vaaranam Aayiram the most magical part of her career and is thankful for 'Meghna' ".[6][7] Many fans and audiences also stated saying that Meghna is up to date one of the best female characters ever that director Gautham Vasudev Menon has ever introduced into cinema and his films.[8][9] Many fans also admire the scene of when Ks. Surya (portrayed by Suriya) meets Meghna on the train calling the scene a magical moment in the film.[10][11] Many also have a small theory that the character of Meghna in the film was apparently a figment of Ks. Surya's imagination.[12]

Legacy of Meghna

In a 2020 interview, Sameera said that "Many people still call me and refer to me as Meghna, rather then my actual name Sameera and i feel i have done justice to that role for the people to embrace my character and continue her legacy".
