Later modifications of this surname are Mehrotra and Malhotra. Whilst Mehra is a general Hindu or Sikh name with origins in the Punjabi language,[4] Mehrotra and Malhotra are derived from the name of a Khatri clan whose founder has been claimed to be Mehr Chand.[5] All the variants remain in use.
