Memon

Memon may refer to:

  • Memon people, a collection of ethnic groups from the northern part of the Indian Subcontinent. Memons come from the Lohana caste of Gujarat.

All Memon groups are belongs to same origin. They belongs to Hindu Lohana business community residents of a place near Thatta namely "Darya" village. Those members who converted to Islam called "Memon". Later they migrated to Indian provinces of Gujrat and Maharashtra for business. Memon todays can be divided into two main group; 1. Sindhi Speaking Memon 2. Gujrati Memon Memon who remains in areas of Sindh like Thatta, Hala, Nasarpur and Shikarpur called Sindhi Memon. They still speaking Sindhi.

Memon who migrated to Kutch, Kathiawar, Halar, Surat and Maharashtra speaks a different dialect of S indhi namely "Memon Dialect" which a mixture of Sindhi and Gujrati words with a slight deviation from Sindhi Grammer. Gujrati Memon subdivided into further sub groups according to their place of residence in province of Gujrat.
