Menotti Lerro

Lerro studied English and Spanish Languages and Literature at University of Salerno, starting in 2000, and received his degree in 2004.[1][2] While there, he had his first experience abroad living and studying in Oxford for seven months as an exchange student.[3][4][5][6] In 2006, after he worked for one year in Milan for Mondadori publishing house, he got a scholarship from the University of Salerno to study abroad and began his masters' degree in “The Body and Representation” at the University of Reading[7] under the supervision of Carolyn Williams Lyle.[8] He later received the expert status of “Cultore della Materia” at the University of Salerno[9][10][11] and in 2010 became Visiting Scholar at the University of Reading where he undertook postgraduate teaching.[12] Later, after completing his PhD in English and Spanish literature at the University of Salerno, he became a Visiting Scholar at the University of Warwick (2014)[13] and at the University of Edinburgh (2020).[14][15] He taught English Culture and Civilization and English Literature at Ciels University of Milan for four years (2014-2018)[16] before moving to Padua to teach the same subjects.[17] In addition, he collaborated and taught lessons at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and IULM University.[18][19][20]

According to Andrew Mangham "Menotti Lerro is one of the most interesting poets in modern-day Europe".[21][22] In 2009, Mangham wrote that Lerro "was described by one of Italy’s most influential critics, Giorgio Bàrberi Squarotti, as a writer of no insignificant importance: [Lerro’s] new collection in verse, so dense and vigorous in the essential lucidity of images, memories, adventures of the senses and of the thought. His poetry has become rich, vital, always persuasive and forceful, often brilliant."[21][23] Lerro earliest published poetry received widespread attention from literary critics, and many reviews were collected in a volume edited by Maria Rosaria La Marca.[24] In addition Francesco D'Espiscopo from University of Naples Federico II has dedicated to Lerro two monographs: the first one about his poetry[25] and a second volume about his novels and dramas.[26] In 2012, in the magazine "Poesia", Roberto Carifi affirmed that Menotti Lerro is one of the most interesting Italian poets.[27] One of his dramas has been the subject of a degree dissertation by Sara Cudia from the University of Palermo. The same work became later the basis for a critical volume about the innovative[28][29][30] figure of a female[31][32] and bisexual Don Giovanni written by Lerro in 2015,[33][34] first performed on 25 November 2017 at the Biblioteca Marucelliana.[35][36] Donna Giovanna has been quickly perceived by critics as a brilliant character[37] able to replace the outdated famous historical version that was, in fact, losing reasons to exist, due to profound changes occurring in our contemporary society's views of libertinism and seduction.[38] The new figure[39] became popular after some fascinating representations: Florence, Milan, Naples, Borgo San Lorenzo and Vallo della Lucania.[40][41][42] Furthermore, distinguished artists[43][44] have dedicated an opera at the new female libertine.[45] In 2008 Mondadori’s important literary magazine Nuovi Argomenti selected Lerro as one of the poets to represent the new generation of poets born in the 1980s.[46][47][48]

The Empathic Movement (Italian: La Scuola Empatica / Empatismo) is a literary, artistic, philosophical and cultural movement born in Italy in 2020[75] within the ‘New Cultural Triangle of Ancient Cilento’:[76] (Omignano - "The Aphorisms Village",[77][78] Salento - "The Poetry Village",[79] Vallo della Lucania - "Seat of Contemporary Arts Centre").[80][81][82][83][84] Starting with the values and ideas expressed in the “New Manifesto of Arts”[85][86][87] written by Menotti Lerro and Antonello Pelliccia,[88][89][90] this movement places at its centre of interest the empathic relationship and, therefore, personality in its ontic and ontological constitution. It follows that any creative or didactic experimentation cannot be separated from a process of identification with the other and its contemporaneity as an opportunity of study and sharing of knowledge and interior life stories. This horizon of meaning implies a civil promotion of the artistic society pouring from individual and community growth according to ethical purposes mediated by an aesthetic dimension: namely, that of Art.[91][92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104]

The Cilento Poetry Prize (Italian: Premio Cilento Poesia), is an Italian literary prize founded in 2017[106][107] by Menotti Lerro and awarded annually in Salento Cilento - "The Poetry Village".[108][109][110][111][112][113][114]
