History
The establishment of a special shipping school in the Netherlands inspired the establishment of a similar institution in the Dutch East Indies in 1915. This university, founded in Makassar, was named Kweekschool voor Inlandsche Schepelingen te Makassar (Vocational School for Indigenous Crews in Makassar), and was established to meet the educational needs of indigenous seafarers by the Royal Dutch Navy. In accordance with the function of its establishment, this school was located on the edge of the coast in Strandsweg, now known as Jalan Rajawali. The first building was erected in 1915 and has been in use since 1916, making the university as it stands today the oldest shipping or maritime educational institution in Indonesia.

In 1921, two new buildings were built for the university which opened for classes a year later. When located at Strandsweg (Jalan Rajawali), the education system used at the school was still mixed; theoretical learning, apart from being carried out in classrooms within the school, was also carried out on Dutch ships at certain times. October 13, 1921 was declared as the date of the establishment of PIP Makassar as stipulated in the Statute.
The school was closed during the Japanese occupation of Makassar (1942–1945). In 1943 the building was used as an internment place for KNIL soldiers and allies who were held captive by the occupying Japanese troops.
