Michael grew up in the country and was sent to boarding school at a young age which he found "traumatizing".[3] As an adult Michael left a successful career as a stockbroker in search of deeper meaning in his life and moved to Nimbin in the late 1980s.[4] Nimbin is a small town in New South Wales commonly known as Australia's cannabis counterculture capital. Michael describes Nimbin as "a refugee camp from the war on drugs".[5] Nimbin is also home to the Nimbin Hemp Embassy, the Legalise Cannabis Party, the annual MardiGrass cannabis law reform rally and formerly the HEMP Museum where Michael has done much of his work.[6]
