Migo (company)

Migo (Chinese: 熱鬧點) is a technology company focused on emerging markets. It currently has market operations in Indonesia. Its content delivery network distributes digital products and services to mass market consumers at the local corner store through Migo Download Stations (MDS). The solution is cheaper than other alternatives. The company aims to use its technology to level the digital playing field for emerging market consumers with limited data consumption.[1]

Migo's technology was shortlisted for the IBC 2021 Innovation Awards, for creating "an entirely new way to deliver digital content in countries that lack a widespread broadband infrastructure."[2]

Migo was founded by Barrett Comiskey[3] who was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2016 for inventing electronic ink and co-founding the E Ink Corporation.[4] Electronic ink is the technology used in the display of e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle. [5]

Migo is backed by sovereign wealth fund Temasek, YouTube's co-founder and former CTO Steve Chen,[6] Founder of Farallon Capital Management's Asian business Raymond Zage, Indonesia Stock Exchange commissioner Pandu Sjahrir, Provident Capital, members from the family of Hysan Development in Hong Kong, Vickers Venture Partners, and Singaporean businessman Koh Boon Hwee.[7]

Migo launched in Indonesia in June 2020.[7] It has existing partnerships for Entertainment content, Education content and Distribution: [8][9][10][11][12][13]

In September 2021, Indonesian media conglomerate MNC Group, through its subsidiary MNC Vision Networks, invested $40M in Migo Indonesia to accelerate Migo Indonesia's rollout and reach 100 million Indonesians across Java by 2022. [15]

As of November 29, 2021, Migo announced it had 888 Migo Download Stations (MDS) in Indonesia, offering access to entertainment and education. The number is about 70% more than the 517 cinema complexes in all of Indonesia. In the same announcement, Migo hinted at Q1 2022 plans to launch pop-up theatrical experiences across the country to provide affordable entertainment options to 85% of Indonesia's population who "if things carry on as is, will gently leave the planet before they sit in a movie theater seat" according to Founder Barrett Comiskey. Migo's roadmap of digital services include financial services, e-commerce and others. [18]

With the $40M onshore deal with MNC as the template, Migo is laying the groundwork for regional expansion.[17]

Technology

Migo's disruptive technology delivers digital products and services to mass market consumers, bypassing traditional telecom networks. At each MDS deployed in local corner stores (e.g. warung in Indonesia), customers can download digital content without using any mobile data and buy subscription passess to access their downloaded content offline. [19]

Migo credits its "unique Innovation Center in Taiwan, and tens of millions of dollars and hundred of man years" of development for the affordability of its "hyper distributed" content delivery network. Migo claims its capex per sub is up to 100 times less than alternatives and capex payback is less than a year.[20]

Geographies

Migo runs its R&D, Engineering and Supply Chain center in Taipei and its Indonesian commercial operations in Jakarta. Migo also has a support center in Manila.[1]
