Mona Almoayyed
Mona Yousuf Almoayyed (Arabic: منى المؤيد) is a Bahraini businesswoman who leads the Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society. The society aims to provide a space for Bahraini businesswomen to network and encourages their participation in the economy. Many members serve on boards of directors, the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and banks and investment firms. Among the organization’s initiatives is the Women Gateway, an electronic portal helping local businesswomen connect domestically and in the broader Gulf States and Arab world. Besides the Businesswomen’s Society, she also is on the board of Yusef Khalil Moayyed & Sons Company, a retail and wholesale firm among the prominent family businesses in the Kingdom.[1] In 2012, the magazine Arabian Business named Almoayyed number 130 on their list of the “500 Most Powerful People in the Arab World.”[2] She was ranked twelfth in Forbes Magazine’s 2008 study “The Most Powerful Arab Woman" and fourth on their list of “The 50 Most Powerful Personalities in the Kingdom of Bahrain". She chaired the Businesswomen’s Society for three sessions (2006–2012), and led the Migrant Workers Protection Society from 2005 to 2011.[3]
Early life and education
Mona Almoayyed was born in Bahrain, the daughter of entrepreneur Yusef Khalil Moayyed himself. With over a thousand employees, the firm markets over a hundred prestigious brands of luxuries, appliances, heavy equipment, medical technology, and concrete. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Westminster in London in 1974.[2]
Career
From 1974 to 2000, Almoayyed served as Executive Director of the Automobile Division at her father’s company. Since 2003, she has been the Financial Secretary of the Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society, chairing the board for a year. In 2005, she was appointed chair of the Migrant Workers Protection Society, rising to President of the Businesswomen’s Society the following year. She has also been vice-chairwoman of the Gulf Businesswomen Committee, an initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council Chambers of Commerce Union, since 2004. Finally, she chairs the Business Women’s Committee at the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry.[2]
500 Most Powerful People in the Arab World
In 2012, the magazine Arabian Business named her 130th on their ranking of the 500 Most Powerful People in the Arab World. The magazine cited her organization’s leadership in helping local businesswomen to network and participates fully in commercial, economic, investment, and development activities throughout the region, through participation in boards of directors, the Chamber, banks and investment firms, and initiatives such as the online Women’s Gateway.[1] She also noted her membership in the YK Almoayyed & Sons board, and gave the following statement:

Our ambition, enthusiasm, and all our efforts are dedicated to changing the perception of women in this region. I am very proud to be one of the import pioneers on the Forbes list, and I hope to be an inspiration to all women and to contribute to progress and change, especially in the Gulf region.[3]
