Morocco World News (MWN) is an English language e-newspaper with its headquarters in Rabat and Washington, D.C. It publishes news about Morocco and MENA region on a wide range of topics like culture, politics, economics, international relations, technology, sports and Western Sahara.

MWN[1] was founded in May 2011 by Samir[2] and Adnane Bennis,[3] two Moroccan brothers living at the time in New York City. In 2017, it relocated its US headquarters from New York City to Washington, DC. By 2019, MWN counted journalists and editors in Washington DC, New York City, Rabat, Essaouira, Fes, and the Netherlands.

Samir Bennis has served as its editor-in-chief, a political analyst and author since its inception. Adnane Bennis has been the managing editor.

MWN Content

MWN covers a wide range of popular topics through news coverage, opinion columns, and features. While the majority of topics relate to Morocco and the surrounding region, they also report international news.

News

Morocco World News covers current events on both the local and global scale. This news coverage includes COVID-19 updates, Moroccan current affairs, the economy, international news, and more.

Politics

MWN publishes articles on many political topics, such as Moroccan government activities, Moroccan foreign affairs, and social issues.[4] The publication presents the Moroccan perspective on local and international news, complimented by opinion pieces, features and political analysis.[5] MWN is a widely cited source on the topic of the Western Sahara conflict based on the expertise of their staff, analyzing the conflict through the lens of history and international law.[6]

Feature articles

MWN publishes many feature articles that go in-depth on aspects of Moroccan history, political relations, culture, lifestyle, and more.[7] Recent features include an in-depth look at Moroccan-Indian foreign relations, an article on Yoga in Morocco, and multiple features discussing the Pegasus Project Affair. Other notable features cover Morocco's role in the Dubai Expo 2020 and Wikipedia's pilot education program in Moroccan schools.

Lifestyle articles

In addition to news coverage and features, Morocco World News publishes lifestyle articles that discuss Moroccan travel,[8] cuisine,[9] fashion,[10] and culture.[11]

Reception

Andrew R. Smith, Professor in the Department of Communication, Journalism and Media at Edinboro University described Morocco World News as a "makhzenian source".[12] Morocco World News analysts regularly appear in a variety of international news outlets including the BBC, Al Jazeera, the Jerusalem Post and i24.[13][14]
