Mr. Bachmann and His Class

Mr. Bachmann and His Class (German: Herr Bachmann und seine Klasse) is a 2021 German documentary film produced, written and directed by Maria Speth and starring Dieter Bachmann, Aynur Bal and Önder Cavdar. The film premiered in the Berlinale Competition section at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival in March 2021[1] where it won the Silver Bear.[2] From 24 to 25 April 2021, the film was screened at the 43rd Moscow International Film Festival[3] and on 20 August 2021 got its screening at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.[4] Other screenings for the film include: Fajr International Film Festival[5] and the New Zealand International Film Festival.[6]

Plot

Dieter Bachmann is a nearly retired elementary school teacher who decides to educate the future generation of 12 to 15-year-olds foreigners the basis of social and cultural realities that they might face in Stadtallendorf, Germany.

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 100% based on 13 critics, with an average rating of 8.3/10.[7] On Metacritic, Mr. Bachmann and His Class has a rank of 89 out of a 100 based on six critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[8]

Diego Semerene of Slant Magazine wrote "The documentary exists within the very restricted pantheon of films that successfully reap the cinematic potential of pedagogy".[9]

Writing for the National Herald, Namrata Joshi commented "It's impossible to imagine that a documentary would be able to hold you in thrall for its 3 hours 37 minutes long duration. But Maria Speth's Herr Bachmann und seine Klasse manages to accomplish exactly that".[10]

According to Jessica Kiang of Variety the film is "a lengthy but absorbing and illuminating documentary".[11]

Attending its premiere at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, Carmen Gray of the British Film Institute called it "patient [and] intimate classroom documentary",[12] while Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter added that Mr. Bachmann and His Class "Just might restore your faith in humanity".[13]
