Mriganka Madhukaillya

Mriganka Madhukaillya is a design researcher, filmmaker, artist, and assistant professor of design at IIT Guwahati.[1][2] He is the co-founder of the media collective Desire Machine Collective.[3][4]

Education

Madhukaillya completed his study at Fergusson College in Pune, India, and received a degree in physics. Also, he completed postgraduate degree in film and video at the National Institute of Design.[3][5] Later, he completed his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.[6][7]

Career

In 2004, he co-founded Desire Machine Collective along with Sonal Jain.[1][2]

Later, Madhukaillya started his career as an assistant professor in the Design Department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati in 2005.[2][8]

At IIT Guwahati, he founded an interdisciplinary media lab in 2007, dedicated to experiments with digital forms of design and learning.[5][2][8] In the same year, Madhukaillya also co-initiated an artist-led space for dialogue across artistic, scientific, technological, and ecological modes of production and knowledge, known as Periferry, situated on a ferry the M. V. Chandardinga, docked on the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati.[3][9][10]

Since 2015, Madhukaillya has been a member of several managing and advisory boards, including a Juror in Visual Arts at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart.[11][12]

Madhukaillya was a visiting professor at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou in 2016–17, and a DAAD Visiting Professor at Merz Akademie, Stuttgart in 2019.[12]

Awards and nominations

Madhukaillya was nominated for the LUMA Award in 2011, for his work with Desire Machine Collective.[14]

In 2015, he was nominated for the Visible Award, Cittadellarte – Pistoletto Foundation, Fondazione Zegna & Tate Liverpool for his public platform Periferry.[8]

In 2017, Madhukaillya received two awards for his artistic projects, from Art Spectrum South Asia and Ars Electronica, Austria.[2]
