Mykal Kilgore is an American R&B artist and actor. His debut album, A Man Born Black, was released on September 6, 2019.

Career

Mykal Kilgore was born and raised in Orlando, Florida, before moving to Nashville, Tennessee as a singer and songwriter after attending Florida State University. He has been mentored by Billy Porter,[1] and his credits include Motown: The Musical, The Wiz Live!, and Hair.[2] He identifies as queer.[3]

Kilgore released his debut album A Man Born Black in 2019. The album debuted at #2 on the iTunes R&B charts and on five different Billboard charts.[4][5] In 2020, Kilgore received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding New Artist,[6] as well as a SoulTracks Readers' Choice Awards nomination for New Artist of the Year.

The lead single from A Man Born Black, "Let Me Go", received a nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the 2021 63rd GRAMMY Awards. Following his 2021 GRAMMY nomination, Kilgore released a single on September 10, 2021, entitled “The Man in the Barbershop”.

He was invited to perform at the 2021 Met Gala in New York City on September 13. Kilgore wore two custom pieces designed by Dapper Dan and worked with an all-black glam team to prepare for the event.
