National Democratic Party (Kerala)

National Democratic Party (NDP) was a political party in Kerala, India that existed from 1974 to 1996 and was the political arm of Nair Service Society.[2] NDP was formed with the aim of reservation of jobs for the economically backward sections of the Nairs. Founded by Kidangoor Gopalakrishna Pillai, then the General Secretary of NSS and K. P. Ramachandran Nair[3] in 1974.

In assembly elections

National Democratic Party contested its first assembly elections in 1982 as an ally of Indian National Congress led United Democratic Front, in which it won four assembly seats. The elected members include Therambil Ramakrishnan, K.G.R. Kartha, R. Sundaresan Nair and K. P. Ramachandran Nair.[4]

In the Third K. Karunakaran ministry as the nominee of Nair Service Society, K.G.R. Kartha sworn in as minister, but he was forced to step down. After Kartha's resign, in September 1983, R. Sundaresan Nair sworn in as the minister of state for health. After R. Sundaresan Nair's resignation, K. P. Ramachandran Nair took over as the minister for health.[5]

Dissolution

After NDP's poor performance in the subsequent elections, NSS dissolved the party in 1996.

In 2019, a spiritual successor of NDP has been launched by some Nair leaders called "Democratic Social Justice Party". The chief patron of the party is Manjery Bhaskara Pillai, who heads over 100 Malabar Nair Samajam units in north Kerala and also the patron of Global NSS Kerala. K S R Menon is the President, Babu Surendrakumar Nair is the General Secretary and S. Santosh is the Treasurer. [6]

DSJP aimed at bringing together all communities that are not covered by caste or religion-based reservation. The party draws support mainly from the Nair community and other related communities represented by Nambiar Samajam, Warrier Samajam and Shaiva Vellala Sangham. [7]
