National Security Advisor (Japan)

The National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan (国家安全保障担当総理補佐官, Kokka-Anzen-Hoshou-Tantou-Souri-Hosakan), commonly referred to as the National Security Advisor, is the Director-General of the National Security Secretariat, a department within the Cabinet Secretariat in charge of the National Security Council. [1] As the principal advisor to the Prime Minister on all matters regarding national security, the National Security Advisor is one of the most senior official in the Office of the Prime Minister of Japan, participating in all meetings of the National Security Council.[2] The National Security Advisor is appointed and serves at the pleasure of the Prime Minister.

The current National Security Advisor is former Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Takeo Akiba, who took office on 6 July, 2021.[3]
