Overview

NPP is a hybrid open-access journal published in print on a monthly basis. A thirteenth issue of NPP, called Neuropsychopharmacology Reviews (NPPR), is published each year in January. NPPR issues include invited reviews focused on a single theme (e.g., sleep in psychiatric illness), together with non-thematically-linked brief papers (Hot Topics) that highlight important discoveries and news items from the previous year.

Focus

NPP focuses on the neural basis of psychiatric illness and its treatment. Content spans clinical and basic science research into the brain and behavior, the properties of agents acting within the central nervous system, and drug targeting and medication development for psychiatric conditions. Increasingly, the Editors of NPP have emphasized efforts to prioritize mechanistic research,[1] moving away from descriptive research that identifies correlations but falls short of establishing cause-effect relationships.

History and Organization

NPP was launched by the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology in 1987. NPPR evolved from the “Next Generation of Progress” textbook series, which was published by ACNP at multi-year intervals until 2002, in response to increases in the pace of developments in the field.

There have been eight Editors-in-Chief (EICs) of NPP in the history of the journal. Past EICs include Dr. J. Christian Gillin (1987-1993), Dr. Ronald D. Ciaranello (1994), Dr. Herbet Y. Meltzer (1994-1998), Dr. Hans C. Fibiger (1995-1998), Dr. Robert H. Lenox (1999-2001), Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff (2002-2006), and Dr. James H. Meador-Woodruff (2007-2012).[2] The current EIC is Harvard neurobiologist Dr. William A. Carlezon, Jr. (2013-present).
