Nicole Simone

Nicole Simone (born 1985), known professionally as Late July, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and actress. Her music is described variously as indie pop, orchestral pop, or alternative pop. [1]

Early life and education

Simone was born March 18, 1985, in Toronto, Ontario. She is first generation Canadian, as her father is from Sicily and her mother is of Irish descent. When she was an infant, her family moved to Tampa Bay, Florida, and then to Del Mar, California, where she spent most of her childhood with much of her extended family.[2]

Music

Her debut EP, Side Swept, was released in 2010 and features the guitar, bass, and keyboard work of Adrian Ellis.[3] From that EP, two singles were featured in the web series Out with Dad: "Side Swept" in season 1, episode 4[4] and "A Well Kept Secret" in season 1, episode 7.[5] Her follow-up EP, Hospital Quiet, was released in 2011. The single "What's Left" was featured in season 2, episode 5[6] of the web series Out with Dad. The single "Truth or Dare" from her third EP, When the Curtain Falls, is on the soundtrack for the film How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town.[7] Her fourth EP, Marathon, was released in 2017.[8] Throughout 2019 and 2020, she has released a series of singles, including "Confetti",[9] "Calling to the Moon",[10][11] and "Cloud and Crown".[12] These singles along with several upcoming releases.

Film and television

In 2020, Simone made her writing and on-screen debut in the miniseries On a List,[13][14] which follows a couple who take on difficult tasks in order to fast-track through dating.[15]

Photography Work

In 2013 Simone started Redemption Dogs, a photo project that documented rescue dogs living in Toronto, Montreal and New York City. Simone interviewed over 1000 families on the impact that adopting a dog had on their life.[16] “The stories that stand out for me tend to be the dogs that were rescued at the end of their lives,” Simone was quoted as saying.[17] Simone later expanded the series to a special New Years jumping photos that celebrated dogs life. [18]

Charity work

Simone is the founder and CEO of Redemption Paws,[19][20] a Canadian registered charity that helps re-home at-risk dogs affected by natural disasters and climate change.[21][22][23][24][25] Simone founded the organization in 2017 in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, raising $27,000 on her own in order to help stranded hurricane stray dogs.[26] [27]

In 2020, Simone advocated for Redemption Paws and other charitable organizations to be allowed into the United States in order to continue disaster rescue work for dogs due to the economic effects of COVID-19.[28] Permission to her organization was granted via Minister of Public Safety, Bill Blair.[29] Simone often consults on canine welfare related topics including growing cost of care for dogs.[30] Simone has a personal interest in disabled dogs particularly those with physical handicaps and blindness.
