She came to prominence in 2012–2013 with her coverage of the Pussy riot trial, the surge in anti-government rallies at the time and subsequent criminal investigations into the activities of Russian opposition supporters. Her critical reports about the Russian opposition prompted TV critic Irina Petrovskaya to describe her as a member of Russian state TV's "special operation forces", and her tone as "prosecutorial and accusatory".[2]
In 2015–2016, she led the author's program Vesti.doc on the Russia 1 TV channel.[3] Since 12 September 2016, together with her husband Yevgeny Popov, she has been conducting a 60 Minutes social and political talk show on Russia 1, announced as a discussion program on high-profile topics.[7][8]
In 2018, Skabeyeva was noted in an attempt to discredit British investigation of poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal.[9][10] At her television program it was said that the Skripal's poising case is 'an elaborate British plot to smear Russia'.
According to the results of an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), published on 29 July 2021, Skabeyeva and her husband Yevgeny Popov own real estate in Moscow with a total value of more than 300 million rubles ($4 million).[11][12] According to the investigation of The Insider published in 2020, Skabeyeva officially earns 12.8 million rubles a year and her husband earns 12.9 million rubles a year.[13][14] The only sources of income are the state-owned media holding All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and its subsidiary TV channel Russia.[13][15]
