It rises above the Schober Pass in the municipality Wald am Schoberpass, where it then flows in a northeasternly direction east of Selzthal.
The Palten flows into the Paltental and its main town Rottenmann. Along with the Liesingtal, it forms a Palten-Liesing Valley in Upper Styria between the Seckau Tauern, the Rottenmann and Wölz Tauern and the Eisenerzer Alps. The Pyhrn Autobahn and the Rudolf Railway run along the valley, where it used to be known collectively as the Kammertal.
