Paul Todd (musician)

Paul Todd is a guitarist from the era of New Wave of British Heavy Metal.[1][2] He looks back at an only two days lasting membership of the early Iron Maiden. Later on he is mentioned as the founder of the still existing band More, but he was also the founder of the recently split up band Sweeny Todd in 1985.[3][4]

Paul Todd needed about 4 years to learn playing the guitar. After that in 1979 he looked for a band to join in the Melody Maker. He successfully absolved an auditioning with Steve Harris at the Hollywood Studios in London. Photos were taken, but Todd felt deterred by the atmosphere during a concert he was invited to watch on 8 May and so he rejected the offered gig two days later.[2]

Paul Todd formed the Band Defender featuring Kenny Cox (Guitar), Brian Day(Bass) and Frank Darch (Drums). The ex-singer of Iron Maiden Paul Day completed the Band, which was then renamed More.[1][2] He left the band before any recordings could be taken. Any records from this time are without Paul Todd. Only a BBC Radio 1 Rock Show Session from 1980 exists; the following titles had been recorded: Atomic Rock, I Have No Answers, Soldier (BBC Metal Explosion LP), Way Of The World).[2]

Sweeny Todd

In 1985 the existence of this band is reported featuring Paul Todd (Guitar), Clive Brown (Vocals) - replaced by John 'Oz' Osmond (Vocals) - , Chris Gregory (Guitar), Tim Collins (Bass), Gary Wise (Drums). Further information is not available.[2]

Trivia

People tell, that he left Iron Maiden because of his girlfriend, who obviously did not like him playing with Iron Maiden.[5][6] Steve Harris farewell is claimed to have been like that: "You'll be sorry!"[2]
