Petite size

In fashion and clothing, a petite size is a U.S. standard clothing size designed to fit women of a short, smaller build of height 5 feet 3 inches (160 cm) or less.[1][2]

Background

The definition of petite is used to describe a fairly short woman or person (usually under 5 ft 1 in (155 cm)). Some may also describe petite as someone whom is very slim or some even believe it's a mixture of the short and slim. However, the word "Petite" which originates from the French language, defined as small, was usually used to describe a shorter or smaller woman or person.

Upon this word becoming more well known to the English language, around the early 1990s the definition was remodeled to describe a woman under the height of 5 ft 3 in (1.60 m), which eventually became a popular term used to compliment short women. When the word took a trend, clothing brands and blogs used it to market towards shorter women.

Frequency

The average height of an American woman is roughly 5 ft 4 in (163 cm), thus about half of the population of women suit the petite definition.

In the UK and throughout Europe the average height of a woman is around 5 ft 6 in (168 cm).
