Philosophica was founded in 1993, at the University of Lisbon,[1] as a generalist journal, before assuming its current editorial line. The journal is notable for its publication of new texts in several languages, Portuguese translations of significant philosophical work in other languages,[2][3][4][5] dissertation summaries[6] and updates to the Bibliografia Filosófica Portuguesa.[7][8][9]

Originally titled Philosophica: Revista do Departamento de Filosofia da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, the journal is now titled Philosophica: International Journal for the History of Philosophy.

It is a non-profit publishing venture, supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT)[10] and the University of Lisbon's Centre of Philosophy (CFUL).[11]. It is published twice a year (June/December) as an academic open access journal.

Beginning 2022 it will be published by the Philosophy Documentation Center[12] as an open access journal with a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND license.[13]
