Prophecy of the conquest of India

Several hadiths were said by the prophet Muhammad about the Muslim conquest in India, which mentioned that a war will take place between Muslims and non-Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, and the victory of the Muslims will take place.[1][2] Literally, these hadiths are often called Ghazwat al-Hind[lower-alpha 1] (Arabic: غزوة الهند; Urdu: غزوہ ہند, lit.'Conquest of India').[3]

In religious manuscripts

A hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah, Muhammad referred to India and said,

Surely a group of us (Muslims) will fight in India, God will grant success to the warriors of that group, and they will drag the kings with chains. And God will forgive those warriors [because of this blessed war]. And when those Muslims return, they will find Jesus, the son of Mary in Syria.[4]

Abu Hurayrah also said,

“If I got that opportunity, I would sell all my new and old stuff and participate in it. When God gave us success and we returned, I would be a ‘free’ [from hell] Abu Hurayrah; who would returned to Syria with the pride of having a sign of Jesus. O Muhammad! It was my deepest wish that I could be so close to Jesus, that I could tell him that I was a follower of Muhammad.”[4]

The narrator says that Muhammad smiled and said: "Very hard, very hard!"[lower-alpha 2]

It is mentioned in the hadith that Muhammad said:

Two groups of my followers, God will save them from hell. One group will fight in India, and one group will be with Jesus, son of Mary.[5][6][4]

There are further references to Abu Hurayra saying,

“The Prophet promised us an expedition to India. If I get it (the opportunity to take part in that war), I will spend all my resources on it. And if I am killed in it, I will be the best of martyrs. And if I come back I will be free from hell.”[7][8][9][4][weak charter (Zayf)][lower-alpha 3]

Narrated by Ka'b ibn Zuhayr, Muhammad said,

“A king from Jerusalem will send troops to India and loot all its resources. At that time India will become a part of Jerusalem (Under his kingship). Then Indian troops will be presented before him in captivity. Almost the whole world will remain under him. Their position in India will remain until the appearance of the Antichrist

Al-Fitan: Nuaym ibn Hammad - 1235[4][11]

Expert's opinions

Some theologians and historians believe that this prophecy was already fulfilled when the Muslims invaded India during the reign of the first Umayyad caliph, Mu'awiyah I, followed by Muhammad ibn Qasim, Mahmud of Ghazni,[lower-alpha 4] Muhammad of Ghor, Timur, Babur,[13] Ahmad Shah Durrani, and any Muslim conquerors in history that has invaded India. The other side believes that it will happen during the time of the Messiah and the Mahdi, because this hadith mentions being with Jesus.[5][6][2] Some scholars hold the view that any conflict between the adherents of believers and non-believers taking place in India right from the prophethood of Muhammad till the end of the world can be included in this prophecy.

Zaid Hamid, a Pakistani journalist, considers Pakistan in the background of that war, as Khorasan part of Pakistan was also conquered by Mu'awiyah I in 7th century AD, and is also located in Indian subcontinent.[11] Because another hadith mentions that the religious fighters of Khorasan were associated with Jesus.[14][2]

Notes

  1. Alternative spellings are Ghazwat-ul-Hind, Ghazwa-e-Hind etc.
  2. Muhammad Nasiruddin al-Albani has said that this hadith, from Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal, is "sahih" (correct).
  3. Many scholars have explained that the chain of this hadith is "weak". Which means that this hadith was passed by a large number of people and were not in written form at the time of the prophet Muhammad.[10]
  4. Ibn Kathir has included the attack of the Mahmud of Ghazni on the Somnath Temple in 1024 AD under this prophecy in his book Al-Bidāya wa-n-Nihāya.[12]
