Pulse FM Hobart

Pulse FM Hobart is an online content publisher and radio station based in Tasmania, Australia. Pulse operates as a radio station and an online content publisher.[2] Pulse FM targets a 15 - 35 age demographic, while the Pulse social media platforms target a varied demographic (Facebook 30 - 54, Instagram 13 - 30).

History

Pulse FM began as an internet-only radio station on 8 April 2016. In late 2016, Pulse FM successfully acquired a narrowcast FM license in the Huon Valley on 87.6 FM, near Geeveston. Pulse FM's 87.6 FM license commenced broadcasting on 22 April 2017.

In August 2017, after several months of successful operation on its 87.6 FM license in Geeveston, Pulse FM applied for a 2nd narrowcast license. The 2nd license was on 87.8 FM, and located on Mt Herringback, near Lower Longley. On 10 February 2018, after several months of preparation, Pulse FM commenced broadcasting on 87.8 FM from the top of Mt Herringback to parts of Kingborough and more of the Huon Valley.

In May 2017, Pulse FM came under cyber attack when the Wannacry ransomware corrupted its computer system.[3]

For several months in late 2018, Pulse FM broadcast on Shortwave 4835khz across the Pacific and several other continents as an experiment. The shortwave signal was transmitted from Razorback, NSW at 1kw. Pulse FM's shortwave signal was regularly received in all states of Australia and parts of New Zealand clearly, and Pulse FM received regular signal reports from long distance reception enthusiasts across Europe and Northern America, who said they could pick up the station clearly.[4]

On 29 August 2018, Pulse FM dropped the "Kingborough and Huon" branding from its name, re-branding itself as "Pulse FM Tasmania", while still keeping a strong focus on the Kingborough and Huon region, which is its primary FM broadcast area.

On 27 March 2019, Pulse FM rebranded to Pulse FM Hobart to broaden its focus area from the initial Kingborough and Huon region and to allow future expansion.

In March 2019, Pulse FM successfully acquired an FM narrowcasting license in Bridgewater, Tasmania, which will allow Pulse FM to broadcast to the Brighton LGA on 87.6 FM.[5]

At the start of September 2020, Pulse FM announced it would be pivoting to position itself as a content creator rather than a radio station, with the radio station now sitting in-line with the digital content platforms.[6]
