Genepil (Mongolian: Гэнэнпил Хатан; 1905 — 1938) was the last queen consort of Mongolia, married to Bogd Khan.[1][2] She was queen consort for less than a year in 1924 but her story has captivated successive generations.[3] Queen Genepil was executed in May, 1938, shot as part of the Stalinist repressions in Mongolia.[4][5][6]

Queen consort

After the Queen Dondogdulam died, Genepil was picked as the next queen among a group of girls between 18 and 20 years old selected by the King's counsellors. She came from a family in Northern Mongolia, around the Baldan Bereeven Monastery. Her original name was Tseyenpil, but was later changed to Genepil. She was already married to a man named Luvsandamba.[2][7][8]
She lived with Bogd Khan until his death on April 17, 1924 when the monarchy was abolished. After having left the Mongolian court she then returned to her family.[4] In 1937, Genepil was arrested along with her family and later executed in 1938 during the Stalinist repressions in Mongolia.[2][9]
